Peony

More than just being the most gorgeous and showy of blooms, the peony is also full of meaning.

Generally symbolic of love, peonies are traditionally given on special occasions as an expression of good will, best wishes and joy. The bloom is an extremely popular choice for wedding bouquets.

Peonies are also the traditional flower given on the 12th wedding anniversary.

Peonies are native to parts of Europe, North America and Asia and are the only member of the family Paeoniaceae. They date back to at least 1000 BC in China.

Unfortunately peonies have a very short flowering season, blooming for just a few short weeks in spring and summer. So we love it when they appear in our gardens and are able to fill our vases with the many colour tones available. We love working with the flower for gorgeous spring weddings!

While it's certainly prized for its beauty and alluring fragrance, the peony flower was historically grown for use in traditional medicine in Asian countries. The roots of the plant were used to treat convulsions, swelling, pain, clotting and many other conditions.

To keep your beautiful peonies looking their best, and to help them last as long as possible here are a few care tips

  • Trim the stems

  • Strip away low hanging leaves

  • Place them in a clean vase and flower food if you have it

  • Every other day do some maintenance, change the water and trim the stems

Enjoy these beautiful flowers!
