As the daffodils give way in the garden to more spring flowers, we are loving the tall blooms of different colour Iris popping up. As the gentle petals strengthen in warmer weather, they also symbolise the start of spring and new beginnings.
The Iris flower is associated with many positive feeling. The three petals represent faith, valour and wisdom and the three sepals, represent courage , hope and love.
In Greek mythology, the Iris name derives from the Greek word 'rainbow', reflecting the wide range of colours that Iris flowers bloom in. The goddess, Iris, who personified the rainbow, acted as the link between heaven and earth.
There are many different colours and species of Iris, with over 200 species recorded in the Iris genus and thousands of cultivators. Iris flowers feature in notable art with many artists taken inspiration from the flower, including Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet.
