Daffodils

Daffodils in hues of lemon and yellow are dotted across the garden and lining the driveway at our Martinborough garden. It is a delight to be picking bunches and giving them to people as the flowers are such a signal, marking the end of winter and the beginning of a new spring season.

In the Language of Flowers, Daffodils represent ‘New Beginnings’, ‘Rebirth’ and the arrival of Spring. The name ‘Daffodils’ are said to derive from the Medieval Latin affodilus and asphodelos in Greek - the plant that grew in the meadows in the underworld.

In Victorian England, Daffodils were given as gifts to express admiration and respect. In literature, the daffodil is often used as a symbol of unrequited love and hope.

Some believe Daffodils to have a more unlucky connection with the thought, if the flowers are bought into the home of anyone who keeps poultry -this will prevent eggs from hatching! Luckily we are not poultry keepers and we love having big bunches of daffodils in our households.
