As winter has arrived with chilly days and frosty mornings, one shrub we look forward to appearing in our gardens is the gorgeous, scented blooms of Daphne Odora, commonly called Winter Daphne.
The Odora part of the name indicates why so many of us love the shrub; its intoxicating fragrance that combines elements of both rose and spices.
The flowers are native to China and Japan and are associated with Daphne, one of the mythical Greek naiads (a nymph of flowing water).
In Greek mythology, the nymph Daphne metamorphosed into the plant to escape the pursuit of Apollo.
Daphne features intensely fragrant pink, white, yellow, green or purple flowers, with deciduous varieties more likely to have pink or purple flowers and evergreen varieties usually having green blooms.
Daphne flowers convey the meaning of sweetness, honesty, love and innocence.
